On 9/19/09 I was glad to have Faune Riggin of KZIM radio sit in on a class. Faune is the program director. She is very conservative. I really enjoy listening to her in the mornings! She is a very good shot!
Missouri RSMo 571.107 (14) lists as one of the areas prohibited from carrying any church or other place of religious worship without the consent of the minister or person or persons representing the religious organization that exercises control over the place of religious worship.
In this day and age, just because a building is a house of worship does not guarantee that it is not subject to being the scene of a violent encounter. Recent history has given us scenario after scenario of assaults, shootings, injuries, and even murders perpetrated at the hands of insane and violent church goers. Note that I did not say worshipers, Christians, or even church members. I said church goers. According to the Church Security Alliance, church shootings in 2008 were up 175% over what they were in 2007. They appear to be on the rise.
A good number of my classes in the St. Louis area are to members of churches and church security teams. A large portion of my students in all of my classes tell me that they plan on carrying concealed in church and that they have the pastor’s permission to do so. I am delighted that so many pastors are seeing the importance of safety and security in the house of the Lord. After all, if you can’t be safe in God’s own house, where can you be safe at? I certainly encourage all pastors and church boards to allow their members to legally carry concealed in church.
All members who carry concealed in church should put their permission or authorization in writing. I know, I know…”My pastor is an honest man and he would never deny that he gave his permission!” But let’s take a look at what could happen in a really bad, worst case scenario.
Your pastor has given you verbal permission to carry concealed in church. You do so for months without incident and then one Sunday morning the nightmare happens.
A crazy lone gunman enters the sanctuary and kills the pastor, kills a few others, and injures more. Several members draw their weapons and fire at the shooter killing or inuring him. Let’s say that a visitor is wounded in the crossfire. Hopefully this wouldn’t happen, but again, we are looking at extremes.
Months after the smoke clears and the fatalities are laid to rest; the injured visitor decides to file a lawsuit against the church and the members of the church who were carrying that day. A major issue that will arise is going to be whether or not these members had permission to carry concealed at church. You know you did, but the pastor is now deceased and cannot vouch for you. Not only that, but the new pastor, who is now facing a lawsuit, can say that he has never given you permission and that there is no record of you ever having permission to carry at church.
For this reason, I recommend that all of my students who carry concealed in church get it in writing. At least two copies should be made. Once copy should be put in a file at the church and the other should be filed away in a safe location by the church member who will be carrying.
These minor details will seem insignificant before and maybe even immediately after the incident (God forbid there be one), but may come into play months or even years down the road. A little preventive planning will could save you a lot of grief and stress.
NEXT CLASS 9/19/2009 - BLOOMFIELD MISSOUI. A PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO BENEFIT THE BLOOMFIELD POLICE EXPLORERS YOUTH ORGANIZATION, POST 4835.
We are now offering two more classes. Check out the Classes Available page for the latest information.
The December class was fantastic. I had a great time instructing it and was able to bring some new material. I was not planning on a January class because I was not sure how predictable the weather would be, however, I have been contacted by a few interested parties that if I were to hold a class, they would attend regardless of the weather. I will be posting another class date soon!
I set my new business cards out in a gas station here in town. An hour later I received a call from a gentleman who picked one up. He signed up for the December 12-13 class. The class is filling up quick but we still have room for a few more. New material is going to be presented in this class for the first time (at least by me) that will make the legal portion a lot more interesting! I'm really looking forward to it!
This is my first post. A friend of mine suggested that I spruce up this site so I added some very informative videos and this blog. Also check out the upcoming class under the "More Information" Tab!"
But what does that mean? I am a member of the NRA and I support what they do. I do believe that when an individual chooses between an NRA instructor and a Law Enforcement certified instructor they get the best of the best when they choose the LE instructor.
More instructors are NRA certified because almost anybody within reason can become a certified NRA instructor. This is not the case with law enforcement firearms instructors. While some LE instructors are NRA certified, some are not. Not just anybody can go to a law enforcement firearms instructors course. Certain criteria has to be met. Only commissioned law enforcement officers are elligible to attend LE firearms instructors courses, and usually only those who have an ample supply of street experience under their belt. Most LE Instructors are also certified to teach in other areas such as defensive tactics, Taser, legal updates, and other topics. This combined training makes the insructor well grounded in many apsects that carry over into the concealed carry training that they make available to you. This classifies your law enforcement concealed carry instructors as "elite"
I would say that the NRA does certify more CCW instructors than anybody else.
You could also say that the average CCW instructor is NRA certified.
I guess that means that the LE Instructors are not your average instructors. We are elite. Outside of the average. A specially trained group with skills that come with the nature of all of our training and the duties that we carry out. Even the instructors who are NRA and LE certified agree!
Here I will post my thoughts on the Divine Doctrine of Self Preservation, future classes, and whatever else crosses my mind.
